Chapter Six

Taylor had never realized how grateful he was to have avoided ever living in an apartment building. Between the Reyes mansion and the pack house, he always had a place to sleep where he wasn’t surrounded on all sides by strangers. Apartments smelled like strangers, from their personal scent to their cooking and their trash, and it was deeply unpleasant.

He couldn’t blame Shaw and Craw from turning down the first three apartments they had toured so far.

Taylor didn’t know why he had never noticed the smell of other humans in close proximity at Nevada’s place before, although Nevada only had one very quiet neighbor on his floor, the entire place smelled of cats, and Taylor admittedly always had something else on his mind when he went there. Nevada had that effect on him, even when Taylor had first gone there ready to tear Nevada apart.

“Ree recommended this next place,” Nevada was telling Shaw and Craw. The three of them were walking together a little ahead of Taylor. “It was a full suite for the homeowner’s mother, but she recently died. The homeowner converted the suite into a rental apartment. It’s technically only a one-bedroom, but Ree said there’s a den with a door that could be used as a second bedroom. They can’t list it for that because the den doesn’t have a closet. You’ll have to buy an armoire, that’s all. Ree said it’s a nice place and the rent should be cheaper than getting a real two bedroom, so it might work for you.”

And it wasn’t in the middle of a smelly apartment building. They were walking into one of the quieter neighborhoods in the city, but they weren’t more than a half mile from the restaurant. It might be a perfect setup for Shaw and Craw, once Carley and Taylor figured out whether or not they were working for the enemy and were therefore approved to stay, that is.

The neighborhood was empty at this time of day. Everyone was at work or school, so the houses were unoccupied. There wouldn’t be a better time to confront Shaw and Craw with few witnesses or other people who might get hurt.

“I went looking for unusual patterns,” Taylor said, abruptly cutting into the middle of Nevada’s explanation. “Places where you used to live had a number of very odd deaths where people were gutted and thrown out of a car. You two weren’t even here a day before a murder like that happened here, were you?”

Everyone had stopped walking, and Taylor watched as Shaw and Craw both took two steps back so they were next to each other, facing Nevada and Taylor. Shaw was slightly huddled behind Craw, like always, but Taylor wasn’t able to let his guard down because of that.

“Antony was a Reyes, but he was a bad egg. The overall loss to the family was only in political clout. The problem is, he knew who is trying to disrupt this city, and I needed to talk to him.
